Students all have access to Wi-Fi before and after school hours. Most students do not live far from places with free Wifi, such as McDonald’s, Panera, coffee shops, or other facilities with access to Wifi. According to Kajeet, one in three students lack home Internet access (1). Not having Wi-Fi at home can cause problems, unless there are features on tablets/computers to access files while in a non-Wi-Fi area. A setting accessible on all tablets/computers, is an offline version of documents changes made without Wi-Fi will still be saved on the tablet/computer. Another way to prevent crashing within tablets/computers is to keep devices updated. These devices will inform the user when the tablet/computer will need to be updated. Tablets/computers are significantly lighter than textbooks. Having multiple textbooks in students backpacks can cause serious back problems or injuries. “Chiropractors recommend that students carry less than 15% of their body weight in their backpacks. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission states that in the 2011-2012 school year, more than 13,700 students aged 5 to 18 were treated for injuries related to backpacks” (ProCon 3). Tablets/computers can cause eye strains from use for an extended amount of time without breaks within the time. Tablets/computers need to be used over textbooks in a classroom. Textbooks may have excellent features within them, but it does not contain anything a tablet/computer does not have. Textbooks do not have a way to ensure students are not cheating. They lack educational games that are available with tablets/computers. The cost of textbooks is rapidly increasing and become outdated in just a matter of a few years. Textbooks may cause serious physical and painful problems for students over the years of his/her schooling.
