It has been about two decades since the world`s first smartphone was introduced to the general public. Since then the smartphone has been a part of life among most people in the world. Online statistics show that more than one billion smartphones have been sold and are being currently used by people across the globe which may even be more in number due to un-registered number of smartphones sold in the black market. Smartphone operating platforms have innumerable number of applications which help people in their day to day lives, and people have become dependent knowingly or unknowingly to smartphones. In 2015- Automobile Statistics of Sri Lanka printed by the transport ministry mentions that, there had been a total of 349 automobile accidents which lead to 39 deaths and injured over 200 people. The main cause for these 349 automobile accidents was the use of smartphones for texting while driving. Of these 39 deaths, 14 deaths were of innocent pedestrians. Contacting someone or finding a route using a smartphone of course is important but it should never be done while driving. Doing this will distract the driver and will put the driver`s, passengers and pedestrians lives in danger. People use their smartphones instead of expensive navigation screens for vehicles these days and this too is very dangerous. Even though it will be cheap to use a smartphone instead of an expensive navigation unit, a driver may put his and someone else`s life in danger unknowingly. These are just few examples of advantages and the disadvantages of people’s reliance on smartphones. To avoid being addictive to smartphones and ruining one`s life or another`s, people should self-discipline and self-educate themselves. If this is a difficult addiction to recover from then one should seek a help from another. It could be someone from your family, a counsellor, a priest or a close friend. If people can limit the reliance to smartphones by just taking the good part of it and distancing from the bad, smartphones can be a good companion to anyone. My belief is that smartphone users should self-discipline and self-educate themselves on the proper usage of smartphones and be well informed about the harmful aspects of life both physical and
