Position Paper: The Disadvantages of English-only Speaking Americans
The world is becoming increasingly global every day. Companies such as McDonald’s, H&M, and Coca-Cola have spread from their original homes to countries half-way across the globe. In this age of globalization, people who speak different languages come into contact frequently. However, English speakers have lagged behind the rest of the world in terms of learning different languages that would allow them to communicate with a wider range of people. Monolingual English speakers are at a disadvantage in today’s world because businesses benefit from those who speak multiple languages, they miss out on cultures the rest of the world has to offer, and they do not benefit from the educational values that learning a language offers. Growing up in Vietnam, I had a genuine passion for learning English. When I was in first grade, I remember that my mother would take me to a House of Culture to attend after-school classes. During the pre-registration period, all of the young people were given a chance to attend any classes they wanted in order to help them decide which classes to take by the end of the week. All of my peers were either practicing martial arts, playing a sport, or learning how to draw. On the other hand, I was wandering around the section that nobody was paying attention to.
