Social media is spreading across the United States at an increasingly fast rate. In 2017, around 81 percent of the American population was operating a social media account, and the number is only growing. Worldwide social media users reached 1.96 billion and were estimated to reach 2.5 billion by 2018. Although many people argue social networking sites are having positive effects on people, they are really reducing social interaction, increasing cyber bullying, and encouraging people to be less productive with their time.
Instead of communicating face-to-face we are now sending texts, snapchats, direct messages, updating statuses and more. Even though all these things are ways of communication, they are all indirect and are decreasing abilities to have personal conversations. Danielle Reed stated, "As people spend increasing amounts of time on social networks, they experience less face-to-face interaction which also makes them more dependent on devices." These two arguments bring up many different arguments on whether social media is affecting people positively or negatively. "83% of these teens report that social media helps them feel more connected to information about their friends' lives, 70% report feeling more connected to their friends' feelings, and 57% make new friends" (Modern Language Association). However, while people are making new friends through social media, there is also the possibility that the people they are meeting are not who they say they are. People can easily make accounts claiming to be someone they are not. Social networking can also expose users to online predators, criminals, and spread false
