Jane Johnson is the director of the AMEX training department she has been tasked with overhauling the out of date career development program within her organization. With such a high profiled project, she is torn amongst her staff as to who should lead the project. The meeting with her staff and the potential candidates did not turn out as well as expected and led to an argument amongst her staff as to who would be a viable candidate for the position. In the meeting, there are two types of conflict preferences that arise, competition and avoidance.

She felt there was some tension at the beginning of the meeting but never imagined how it would turn out. The situation between John and Denise quickly escalated as Denise proclaimed, “Everyone expects me to lead this project. If I don’t get the job it will be a slap in the face” (Shockley- Zalabak , 2009 p331) it was her way of deliberately undermineing Johns accomplishments and limiting Jane’s choices, and pushing John to counteract and argue to his point more aggressively. Jane chose to keep the initial conversation of who should lead the project, as she no longer wanted to use the maintenance relationship that she had developed with Denise of honoring long-term relationship rules. The tactics we saw completely changed the initial conversation and made an already tense situation even worse. Jane will need to change the environment and address the situation with her employees before she can come to a solution on will lead the training …show more content…
To do this would address and only clarify the point that each was trying to make to Jane but not address the tense situation between John and Denise. Jane will now need to get these two parties in a room together to express any grievances on how they feel about the situation. They will also need to discuss any other professional points of views with Jane as an active mediator. John has taken an assertive stance and Denise an uncooperative position, the best way for them to resolve the issue is to meet in the middle. Work on the project together from a collaborative position, each adding their own benefits to the project and letting go of the issues that can derail a successful project, as they are now equally responsible for its outcome. This will allow John to gain his experience and develop his professional experience, while Denise will be able to work on the project and lend her expertise to the
