Conversation And Bilingual Analysis

I 've even seen with the staff and teachers, they want to be, staff up here and kids down here and that doesn’t work with these kids. They are already fighting against hierarchy anyway and authority. That is probably why they went to jail or whatever their situation is. Whenever you act like their friend and I genuinely care about them, I think that is a huge thing and to work with these populations. It 's not just the curriculum, you have to form that relationship or they are not going to listen to you.

Interviewer: You said you are in the process of getting your counseling degree as well.

Interviewee: Yeah, that goes hand and hand. I think the girls see that I do talk to the staff and that I 'm close with them. I know, that’s why

I love working with this population versus a high school population because they are completely different, even if they are the same sage, they are not the same. It a different conversation and I think that working with teens in a substance abuse center, especially girls, I think it 's really impactful too since I am a female and I do share some, not personal information, but I tell them that I could have easily been in this situation, about the decisions that they make.

A lot of times, people tell me that they will miss you and completely changed my idea of what sex education looks like. Because when they think about sex education, they think it 's like what they see on TV and that you 're basically going to die or some old lady teaching you. So, I think that is a big thing within this population, you have to be relatable and I love working with them because they are funny and their lives are insane and the things that they have had to go through.

Interviewer: So, I want to make sure that I 'm hearing you clearly, so, kind of thinking about the curriculum, do you see it having an impact in relational piece is still not written in and you really go out of your way to make that

Interviewer 2: And kind of related to that, you talked about different group dynamics; I don’t know if you have any comments about?

Interviewee: I don’t know because I do mix gender groups too, like ACH is mixed gendered. It might be beneficial for these girls, I 'm not sure. I know with ACH it 's beneficial because they are able to debate with each other or talk about it and be able to hear specifically, I remember the last group I did with ACH, one of the boys was like, and what if the girl doesn’t want to use condoms? He was saying that he had been in that situation.

So, I think for females here, that guys are put in that situation too and that they are allowed to walk away, I think it makes it a better conversation. Even with the eighth graders, its mixed gender and we won 't let them split them us because we want them to know that it 's always the same conversation. I don’t know how it would affect the ones here, because Raul at Dallas County has mixed gender too. Sometimes, it 's all boys and one girl. That is something that I guess you would have to ask them because I 'm not

Christine Flowers, author of “With No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to Learn,” feels really strongly about single sex schools. She informed us about single sex schools, but mostly tired to persuade us into thinking that they are better than coeducational schools. This is an interesting topic because both of theses systems of education have positive and negative outcomes with them. The author, who grew up in an all women’s school, obviously supports that kind of education. I don’t agree.…

Short Term 12 was a good movie, and I am glad we saw it. Short Term 12 deals with the idea that “You are not their parent, you are not their therapist, you are here to create a safe environment.” I believe that is 100% true. I would have no problem complying with this because I have a little experience working at a facility with at-risk teenagers. I may have some missteps, as I am only human, but overall I would keep this in mind while working with any population.…

Studies have proven that kids same sex classes get better grades, but grades aren't the only thing that matters. Having boys and girls together helps kids develop as a person, because they're exposed to more, therefore we should not have girls and boys separated into different classes in school. First off, there are more than just two genders. Where are you planning on putting the kids that don't fit into those two, very small, society conforming, boxes? What about non-binary or gender-fluid kids, to name just two of the other possibilities.…
