Abortion Rights Life can be describe as one of the best gifts given to someone. Fortunately, everyday people are blessed to see new life created and others living their own. One prime right every human has is a choice. Abortion is one dilemma that challenges this right. The right of women to have an abortion in the United States has both supporters and opponents. Abortion is the act of ending a pregnancy before birth occurs. It can be achieved in several ways including a surgical procedure or through medications. Abortions done later in the pregnancy are often done in hospitals or specialized clinics. The main argument held by pro-choice supporters is that it should not be considered killing another human, because it is part of the woman 's body and it cannot function without it. They believe that only when the baby can live independently can it have its own rights (Mckinley 45). Although Mckinley states that the fetus is, in fact, alive, the fact that it has a full set of human DNA does not give it the rights a human would have. Instead of looking as the fetus as a person, they consider it to be a potential person (Mckinley 47). Another factor that is considered to make someone human is “consciousness” which is the self-awareness someone develops that helps them think differently than others (Mckinley 48). Furthermore, pro-choice supporters know that a child does not develop consciousness well after being born and does not think it gives the right to kill a child that is already born (Mckinley 49). Another reason pro-choice supporters choose to support abortion is because of the dangers pregnancy can bring to women. Pregnancy complications kill about 670,000 women every year, excluding abortions. Even in more developed countries, pregnancy is 13 times more likely to kill a woman rather than abortion (Mckinley 50). A women has the right to protect themselves from the harms of child birth and giving the rights to the fetus take away the right of the women to choose what she wants to do with her body (Mckinley 52).
