Author, Eliana Dockterman in her article, “The Digital Parent Trap,” exposes the potential benefits of technology use among young people. Dockterman purpose of the essay was to talk about the benefits of having technology in the school for kids. “On average, according to research cited by MIT, students can remember only 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear and 50% of what they see demonstrated.” “...in the virtual worlds on iPads or laptops- that retention rate skyrockets to 90%” Dockterman purpose of these two passages in the article is to make an argument that technology in school are beneficial to the students. The audience that Dockterman is talking to, is to the concern parents about technology. The evidence that Dockterman shows us is that having integrating technology schools is a lot more beneficial to the students. She shows us the amount of retention that the students of this generation have. What Dockterman is trying to do her is trying to convince the audience, which would be the parents. The parents are not quite convinced about having technology in the schools. “For years, the Parental Adage was simple: The less time spent with screens, the better.”. This is what most parents were thought to be true. What Dochterman is trying to explain is that time has changed since that studied has been done. We are evolving and learning different compared to one decade
