Amy Jo Martin made an interesting comment about social media. “Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand.” (Martin, Web) This is the age of technology and social media. People all over the world can connect and help each other via social media. There are two different views as to how social media affects us. Some people think that social media can help us in numerous ways, while others think that it can cripple society. There are multiple things that happen in the world at the same time. People today living in the United States can know what is going on globally. Social media allows people to stay informed. (STROM, Web) For instance, I was on my phone one day and I was looking through social media when I saw that they legalized gay marriages. It is great that so many devices now have application that allow people to access these different news media in order to stay connected and informed. Knowing what is going on today can help people learn and contribute to other countries or states when help is needed. Some of the relationships I have been able to be maintained because of social media. I am able to increase the time I spend with relatives and friends. (STROM, Web) Skype helps me to video chat with my family and friends so that I can see them. I have been able to text, facetime, video chat, snap chat, used Instagram, and used Facebook in order to maintain many of my friendships with family and friends. It can be very exciting and fun to use. There are others that use social media to stay connected for the same reason. When we see people through social media, it motivates us to reconnect and stay connected with others. (Harris, Web) Social media not only helps people stay connected with friends and family, it helps people make entirely new friendships and form new relationships.
