There are quite a few similarities and differences when it comes to life in prison versus the death penalty. Some people may ask which punishment is worse. “The two types of punishment are similar in the way that they are the most extreme sentences administered today” (2008). Life in prison is a death sentence itself being that the offender will never have the chance to see the outside of a prison gate nor will they ever be a danger to society again. The death sentence, less likely used, is quick but does not seem to be the most popular form of punishment in America today.

The illusion of death row inmates fitting a cookie cutter description is not true. Inmates on death row come from various socio-economic backgrounds and careers. Not all death row inmates are guilty. In 2004, the state of Texas executed Cameron Todd Willingham for allegedly setting his home on fire, killing his three daughters. However, it was the work of the Innocence Project (Garland, September, 13, 2010) proving the forensic and informant attested in court was invalid and just not true; hence, an innocent man was executed.…

Ernest Van Den Haag begins his article asking if the death penalty deters more than life in prison. Haag says that even though life in prison is unpleasant, it is still very different from taking the life of a person. He says that 99% of people on the death row would rather be in life sentence (Pg,392 right column). I think anyone would prefer to stay alive, but isn’t a life sentence just like the end of a persons life? They will be confined to a cell for the rest of their life.…

No doubt that living is better than death; however living in a confinement for an extended period of time (several decades) is tiring and a punishment in itself. The death sentence does not make the criminal any better or make the criminal feel guilty about his/her wrong-doings. The criminal gets put to sleep and no type of punishment is served; the victim does not get the genuine justice. Why should the government kill people who themselves kill other people to show that killing is wrong. Death Penalty is unethical and it should be condemned, most religions, if not all, have some relationship to why a killing is wrong.…

Every day, people are executed by the state as punishment for a variety of crimes. Life without Parole is an alternative to the Death Penalty. In every state that retains the death penalty, jurors have the option of sentencing convicted capital murderers to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Unlike the death penalty, a sentence of Life without Parole also allows mistakes to be corrected. According to the California Governor's Office, only seven people sentenced to life without parole have been released since the state provided for this option in 1977, and this occurred because they were able to prove their innocence.…
