In many cases throughout the animal kingdom females run the mating game determining who they in turn want to mate with. One example of such depicted within the video was that of Barn Swallows. Barn swallows are sleek little song birds and are common throughout most of Central America. There was a theory that female Barn Swallows chose males with darker feathers more often to father their young. This was tested by darkening male Barn Swallow feathers with a marker and keeping track determining if they really indeed mate more then others.…

MONKEYLUV: A CRITICAL REVIEW As I picked up picked up my AP Psychology required reading, Monkeyluv by Robert Sapolsky, I wondered what on earth animal behavior could have to do with human psychology. The idea that we could draw connections between the conduct of mice and humans escaped me; I had forgotten that humans were, in fact, animals. Sapolsky does his best to drive this point home as he humorously, yet intellectually, illustrates the idea that humans and animals are often more similar than we’d like to admit, and how by studying their behavior, we might better understand our own. Just who exactly is this man to be shattering my worldview?…

Before conducting my observations and research, I initially believed that captive primates would express less food and mating stressed as zoo keepers provide the proper amount of food and assign individuals mates as they come to reproductive ages. Although there are some supporting evidence, there is not a significant amount to conclude that my initial hypothesis and predictions are correct. What I initially believed just be a display of curiosity and interest from the Red-tailed guenon was actually in fact a threat display. Red-tailed guenons use staring, seen in the photographs above, combined with head bobbing as threatening display, this has their eyes fixed on the stimulus (Flannery 2007). One way that humans use animal behavior to tell someone something is territoriality. Territoriality is a behavior that is meant to signify that this person, place, or thing is “mine.” Humans use this to show people that this certain bag is mine or this is my boyfriend so “Back Off.” Animals use it in a few more unsophisticated ways than we do. Animals become territorial when another enters their space or approaches their mate and offspring.…

The similarities between the social behavior of primates and humans are quite intriguing. In observation of human interaction in various situations, it is clear that a number of behaviors are also present in their distant primate relatives. Although evolution made a clear distinction on what is human, the innate behaviors of primates are still present within their everyday lives. From watching interactions between close friends, two individuals in a committed relationship, and two siblings, social behaviors present in primates can be seen in human lives. The understanding of the relationship between primate and human social behavior came from observing human interaction in three different settings.…

From zoos, to aquariums, to petting zoos, and even our own pets, humans have always been fascinated by animals, and have gone to certain extents to use them for learning purposes, preservation, survival, companionship, and occasionally entertainment. Menageries allow people to learn about animals from a safe distance and see some animals which they would never have seen if it were not for wildlife parks. Many argue that captive animals are not happy in their environment, and should be set free from zoos in their natural habitat. Although many find captivity cruel and unnecessary, having animals in captivity is beneficial to our society as well as to captive animals because when done right, endangered species are protected and well taken care of, people are able to experience beautiful wildlife,…
