It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences(Audre Lorde). Since I have memory, I remember coming to the United States of America to buy clothes with my family, more than twice a year. Since I am Mexican, I have always found a difference between American culture and our culture. But it was until some years ago, that I can see how those differences that I saw since I was little, are known as Racism. Which is one of the biggest problems that United States and the whole world are experiencing right now. Racism is becoming as bad as ever before and this can bring major social issues.
According to Jim Greasley from Los Angeles Times, White Americans are nearly as blind to their racism as ever before. He talks about a white man saying to another man that he believes Black people really do not want civil rights or integration. “If God had meant white people and black people to mix, he would have made them one color” the man said(Greasley). This social issue is spreading more and becoming a normal thought for many white people. Now they are starting this racism against many different races like Latinos, Arabs and some others. This issue come all the way from the bottom and begins with the social interactions these people make. “Historically, Mexican Americans responded to questions about ethnic background with labels such Latin American or Spanish, as we showed with 1965 data in Generations of Exclusion” (Tellez and Ortiz).This reinforced European ancestry in responses about group membership and a distancing from indigenous heritage.
