The first theme that is frequent in both stories was friendship. This element fits mostly in the second book, A Separate Peace. The boys at Devon have a strong bond keeping them together. In A Separate Peace, Phineas feels the ultimate betrayal from his roommate and long time bestfriend, Gene. Gene had unknowingly tried to injure and almost kill Phineas when they were on a tree limb about to jump into the river. He knocked Phineas off by jolting the branch, and Phineas fell and broke his leg. Gene didn’t even realize that he purposely did it until much later, and when it was revealed to Phineas, he was extremely angry and hurt. It ultimately led to him injuring his leg more when he fell down the stairs, and during surgery complications, Phineas died. If Gene hadn’t betrayed Phineas, it wouldn’t have conclusively led to Phineas’ passing. In the alternate book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NIght-time, Christopher found a different type of betrayal. His father had lied to him for an extensive period of time about his mother’s apparent death, and he even found out that his father had killed a dog in a fit of anger. Due to Christopher’s shock, he runs away from his father and home, and leaves to see his mother. The types of loss are fairly different in the two novels. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, the loss is temporary. For years, Christopher thought that he had lost his mother, but in the end, it turns out that she never passed away. Christopher was just told that to cover up a broken relationship. Ed Boone, Christopher’s dad, temporarily loses Christopher in the story when he runs away. Another example of loss in the first book was how Mrs. Shears her large black poodle, Wellington after he was murdered. The loss in A Separate Peace is different; it’s permanent. In the end, Phineas dies. The loss of his friend stays in Gene’s mind for as long as he lives because Phineas was one of his greatest
