Praise or Not
In the modern age, education is a freeway toward a successful life. Most students have found their methods to have high motivation and efficiency to study better. Family or teachers often praise their students for their good works, or simply just want to manipulate students for a certain goal. Is praise needed for a student in his school life? Many scholars now question our method to use praise, since praise has profound impact on students. In my perspective, praise is not dearly needed in students` lives compared to the usage of praise in today` manner.
Empty praise hurt students in their interest and motivation rather than helping them to become more confident. It is normal to hear praise from teachers or fellow students when a student does a good assignment or achieve a good …show more content…
Kamenetz explained the idea of “sugarcoated control” in the article of “ The Difference Between Praise and Feedback”. It describes the praise as a sugarcoat for real proposes behind the praise. For students, the real proposes most likely are their works needed to be improved, or they make too many mistakes. Some students are good at taking in those advice even without that “sugar layer” of praise. Alston from “Red Pen Anxiety” presents her stories about her grandmother and her essay. All along her path of writing, her grandmother read her essay and made criticism on her paper without praise. She was afraid first to her grandmother, but she became a better writer by time. At last, she understood her grandmother`s intend was to help her, even it was not in the kindest form of delivering the meaning. More extreme example from the “Tiger Mother”, Chua used harsh criticism to motivate her daughter by fear. It is not an usual way to do, but it works in her situation, which the daughter does have achievement in the aspect of music. In a few words, students who can take harsh criticism are more effectively
