Genocides have been present throughout history from the Roman destruction of Carthage in 146 BCE and the Athenian massacre in 416 BCE (Mulligan) to the Rwandan genocide and Darfur. The only difference between genocides in the ancient world and today is the methods used to carry them out. Much of the technology we have changed how propaganda and basic principles are carried out; even just from 1941 to today technology has advanced tremendously. Although there are many differences between them, ISIS and the holocaust are similar because both use modern propaganda, religious persecution, and fear to try to control large areas. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria persecutes Christians. They believe that they are doing what their god wants by forcing any Christians to either pay, leave, convert, or die (What is Islamic State). Many of the individuals that make up ISIS are what we might consider “radical Muslims” in that they commit acts of terrorism to please their god. The atrocious acts that they commit is not terrorism in their minds because they are only doing what their religion states; although according to the rest of the world they are a terrorist organization. “Terrorism: actual or threatened use of violence, directed by groups or individuals against noncombatants, to achieve political ends through intimidation. Under U.S. law, international terrorism involves the citizens or territory of more than one country, and noncombatants include unarmed or off-duty military personnel as well as civilians. Terrorist activities include bombings (including suicide bombings), skyjackings, abductions, and other actions that threaten or result in injury or death to noncombatants. A terrorist attack typically aims at terrorizing others who are usually random victims,” (Terrorism). Judging by that definition ISIS is definitely a terrorist organization. No matter who you are, when fear grips you it is crippling. Both the Nazis and ISIS use fear to control. During World War II Hitler used fear before the war officially began to start gaining control. He used threats of war on countries that would be destroyed if they were forced in to a war (Glennon 270). The Nazi party used cunning and trickery to scare people into cooperating, such as the invasion that ignited WWII where the Germans dressed in Polish uniforms and staged a Polish raid on a German radio station (Glennon 276). Soon after the invasion of Poland, ghettos were reintroduced to Europe to be used as social control of the Jews. Any city with a significant Jewish population had ghettos constructed. Entrances were guarded constantly and the living conditions were appalling. A slow starvation was not uncommon, the average amount of calories consumed daily by a Jew was 184. If a child died many parents would hide their children for days to get their rations. Everyone knew that if they did not die in the ghettos, they would be taken to the death camps such as Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Treblinka, and Majdanek (Glennon 282). Unlike the Holocaust, ISIS offers choices. You may pay, leave, convert, or die. Sometimes even if you choose to pay or convert you still are killed.
