Comparing Fahrenheit 451 And Cold Equations

What would happen if something were to occur unexpectedly in a place where nothing really happens? Montag, in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, is a fireman in suburbs, and Barton, in Cold Equations by Tom Godwin, is a pilot on a spaceship. Both main characters have problems that need to be fixed to make their world right. People should start being more aware of their surroundings and what can happen around them. Although there are some small similarities, the difference between Fahrenheit 451 and Cold Equations are significant. Montag and Barton both have different problems, Montag wants to gain the knowledge of books and Barton wants to help keep a stowaway girl from having to be jettisoned off the spaceship. First, in Fahrenheit 451, Montag couldn’t stand the fact of not knowing what was in books, so he did something no one ever dares to do in his society. Faber, a professor, asks Montag, “‘The book where did you-?’ Montag interrupted, ‘I stole it’” (81). Montag does the unimaginable and the most unlikely thing just to get his hands on a book. On the contrary, in Cold Equations, Barton had never seen a girl stowaway on the space cruiser and had no idea on what to do. It should be known that risking your job to read a book and having to kick someone off a ship just to be able to save gas for the expedition, won’t happen anytime soon in the real world. While Cold Equations occurs in the future, the writing done in Fahrenheit 451 makes it seem as though it was written in the twenty-first century instead of the mid-twentieth century.
