The Importance Of Dietary Assessment

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the subject, a male second-year University student, met the relevant National Reference Values and calculated energy requirements using four different dietary assessment techniques and to suggest dietary changes the participant can make if necessary.

The importance of a wholesome and well-rounded diet is a popular topic in society as nutrition is a clear determinant of health (1). Various dietary assessment methods are used to gain an understanding of an individual or group dietary intake, but no single technique of assessment has been proven perfect, as each method is unique (2).

The participant undertook an eight-day diet record, 24-hour recall, diet history, and food frequency questionnaire within a four-week period to gain a detailed understanding of their mean dietary intake, which can then be compared to the national nutrient reference values specific to the individual. Once analysed, necessary dietary changes can then be made to ensure that the individual is meeting their requirements.

This report will discuss in detail the methods of dietary assessment used, including advantages and disadvantages, as well as why results obtained may differ between various assessment techniques.

Its strengths include actual weighing and recording of foods eaten at the time of consumption, which eliminates forgotten food items which may be prevalent in other methods such as a diet recall. A diet record provides an accurate energy intake, and foods eaten can be directly linked to adequacy of vitamin intake. To eliminate variation in the discrepancy of portion sizes, the weighed method trumps estimated.
