The Atkins Diet is one of the most popular diets today. It has been around since 1972 created by a cardiologist Robert C. Atkins. Originally, the diet was developed for people who wanted to lose weight, but it has also been recommended for patients with refractory epilepsy and other medical concerns. The Atkins Diet is a ketogenic diet, which means low carbohydrate intake paired with high protein and fat intake. The point of this diet is for the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates to promote weight loss. People enjoy following this diet because it is not restrictive; participants do not need to track how much calories they consume and are able to enjoy a variety of foods. I think that if you don’t have to I will choose not to go on this plan because they are many other ways to lose weight. The Atkins diet is a good way to lose weight but it may not last for long. In the randomized trial, although participants lost a lot of body fat percentage in the beginning months, the effect gradually becomes less effective and eventually the body fat starts to bounce back slowly. So if you ever go on the diet and go back to regular eating habits, your weight may go back to normal and may even get heavier. Going on any restrictive diet is mentally stressful, especially for Atkins diet. Other diet plans may need participants to count calories, and even though Atkins diet does not involve counting calories, counting carbohydrate intake is necessary and it is just as annoying. Also, with low-carbohydrate intake, people will have less energy which causes fatigue. So before people want to go on this plan they should research on this diet and look at reviews, pros and cons, and what they will be going though before deciding to commit to this
