The Atkins Diet is one of the most popular diets today. It has been around since 1972 created by a cardiologist Robert C. Atkins. Originally, the diet was developed for people who wanted to lose weight, but it has also been recommended for patients with refractory epilepsy and other medical concerns. The Atkins Diet is a ketogenic diet, which means low carbohydrate intake paired with high protein and fat intake. The point of this diet is for the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates to promote weight loss. People enjoy following this diet because it is not restrictive; participants do not need to track how much calories they consume and are able to enjoy a variety of foods. Additionally, studies (CITATION NEEDED) have shown that the Atkins Diet is effective in helping people reduce weight, especially in the beginning phase. The Internet is filled with successful anecdotal stories. Even though this diet may be effective in weight loss and may potentially increase people’s body-image, there are debates as to whether this diet is healthy. One of the experiments with the Atkins diet involved 63 patients who had to follow the Atkins diet plan or another energy-restricted diet which has more carbohydrate intake. In this study, the researcher observed that patients that were on the Atkins diet was a lot more effective than the other diet, notably in the earlier months.
