According to our textbook, An Invitation to Health by Dianne Hales, a mental disorder is defined as a “clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that is associated with present distress or disability” (p 56)One in five people will experience a mental disorder, while five percent will experience a serious mental disorder. With each mental disorder comes a series of obstacles, which can range from getting help, dealing with everyday life, or just getting out of bed. One important obstacle is decided on who to tell –if anybody- and how to tell them. There’s a social stigma that surrounds psychological disorders that can impede getting a job, keeping a job, or starting relationships.…

Kristianna Mason Borderline Personality Disorder Greenville Technical College Mental illnesses are commonly referred to a wide range of mental health conditions. These are disorders that affect many things in a person’s life which includes their mood, behavior and cognition. From time to time, there are many people that develop these mental health illnesses and they become concerning when there are symptoms and ongoing signs that cause recurring stresses and the inability to function properly, alone. In 1883 Emil Kraepelin developed this widely-used classification system and it has been continuously improved upon until the most current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or the DSM-V (Comer, 2014). Each entry in the DSM-V offers criteria and descriptive text that assist the clinicians in their diagnoses. Another advantage of diagnosis and classification is that the DSM-V ranks high in terms of reliability and validity. To ensure high reliability the framers of the DSM-V “gathered input from a wide range of experienced clinicians and researchers” (Comer, 2014, p. 86). The strong validity of the DSM-V stems from the framers consulting other clinicians to help ascertain the predictive validity of this classification system meaning that the use of the diagnostic categories can predict how the psychological problems may progress and how they will respond to treatment (Comer, 2014).…
Psychological disorders and mental health issues in today’s society affect many people in a variety of ways. Many people in society are often stigmatized and labeled because of a psychological disorder shunning them from society, the work place, schools, friends, and more. However, recently through my research I see how many people are working their jobs, handling their careers, never stop working and aspiring with their goals, and face varied challenges at home, work, and out socially using a variety of therapies from medications, to psychologist visits, and even psychotherapy. There are over four hundred types of psychological disorders.…

There are many disadvantages with the DSM 5; “(1) it counters strength-based perspective, (2) it is pathologizing, (3) it is individualizing, ignoring social contribution such as oppression, poverty, (4) it is stigmatizing/labeling and (5) it forms socially constructed views of mental illness” (Regehr & Glancy, 2014, p. 93). However, I believe that I will be able to use these assessments to coincide with my social work to provide the best opportunities for my clients. Mental health is an area where such assessments like the DSM 5 are used and if I am knowledgeable of the advantages along with the disadvantages it will give me a position to advocate for my client when decisions are made for them that place them into a…
