The Holocaust was horrible and many authors have written books or articles about it. However what was the point that they were trying to get across? In The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen a girl named Hannah gets sent from present day New Rochelle, AMerica to 1946 Poland. She then has to figure out whether this is reality or if New Rochelle is reality. Another novel is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne where a young boys father is sent to be commandant at Auschwitz where he makes a great friend and eventually crosses the fence to visit him, for the last time. A nonfiction Scope article called “Teens against Hitler” is about a boy who escapes a Nazi concentration camp joins a secret society that secretly robs nazi train loads and helps prisoners escape. In the historical fiction novels titled The Devil’s Arithmetic and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas the author’s use different techniques to lead us to find the general theme. In The Devil’s Arithmetic on page 63, the narrator states “she was not Hannah Stern of New Rochelle… memories”. The author used the technique of characters to show that what happened was horrible and that it should never be repeated. It is amplified to the fact that people forgot who they were as a whole and how to live with trust. Also, in the Devil's Arithmetic on page 86, Shmuel states “There are five old woman from viosk and old shimshon the tailor...he whispered…and a child”. The author used the technique of the pain of death to show again how gross the Nazi concentration camps were.
