The Devil's Arithmetic: A Short Story

As I entered the school trailer in pre-K, I was super excited to show my two teachers what I had learned at home. One was a female, blonde frizzy hair, probably in her forty to fifties, with terrible makeup and the other one I don’t quite remember as I think she didn’t have any extraordinary features. I really wanted to show them what I had learned but class had begun and I didn’t want to interrupt them. When I found the opportunity to raise my hand and they picked on me, I was ready to show them what I had learned. “I know how to spell water! It’s W-A-T-E-R” I said. “Wow, great job Alex!” they probably said. I was quite the show-off in class and often I was in competition with my other friends John, Kimberly and Donovan. Garuccio was actually a really good teacher and taught really well. She would always read us The Devil’s Arithmetic and would always cry throughout the story. I had also created a website for the class and showed it to her and she was really proud of me. I had constantly copied the homework questions from the math textbook onto the website because sometimes people forgot to bring home their math textbooks. I later found out this was a bad idea because I didn’t have a phone back then and had to type all the questions down one by one. One day I didn’t feel like posting the homework questions onto the website and relied on my classmates remembering to bring home their textbooks. One of my classmates named Victoria was one of those sassy girls who often cheated on tests and that day she didn’t forgot to bring her math textbook home. “Why didn’t you do your homework Victoria? You have no excuse because the homework is posted on the class website!” yelled Mrs. Garuccio. At that point I felt extreme guilt as I had got her into trouble. “Well, it wasn’t posted on the website!” said Victoria. “Is this true, Alex?” said Mrs. Garuccio. I had to explain her that it taxed a lot of my time and everything was resolved, but I felt depressed that I didn’t do what I was expected to

The desks in the classrooms were set up for collaborative learning which seemed to really work for her students. Mrs. Gaither also did great job in teaching with all the different learning styles so that she could reach each student’s preference. After each assignment, Mrs. Gaither went around to each individual student and went over their answers with the student. Based on what answers they got wrong is where she would focus more attention. I found this style of teacher very helpful to each student because it wasn’t just as a whole.…

Literacy Narrative What is Literacy?Google defines literacy as “the ability to read and write.” Literacy plays a major role in our everyday lives, writing our essays that are due within two days, writing a post on facebook, reading a text message, etc. Everyone experiences literacy in a different way, some experience a struggle, not being able to comprehend the purpose of literacy or avoiding it. and others thrive in it. In the novella, Night by Elie Wiesel, the author paints an unforgettable image of suffering and despair that he, as well as other Jews, encountered while in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime. As hard as it is to believe something so evil occurred, the movie The Devil 's Arithmetic gave a face to all these horrific events that occurred and it leaves a impact on the viewers. In both the novella and the movie share questions that are relevant to each its own way. The first question is " Why is it important for the next generation to remember that millions of Jews were killed in concentration or death camps?", it is important for everyone to know about this simply to stop the naysayers and stop it from occurring again.…

Shining Library Book Me and classmates were told that we had to do something nice for the school. It wasn’t just our grade, it was the whole middle school who had to something. There were tons of jobs to be done just inside the building. When it was nice out, some of the 8th graders would go out and do the things outside, while the rest of us stayed inside. My job was organizing the bookshelf in the library.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

As I get off the bus from the long day of school, I head on over to the building ahead of me to now start with the next task in my day, tutoring. The school year had just begun a short while ago and I had to juggle the responsibilities of a new job and school work for the first time. Walking into the school, I saw the familiar faces of kids I worked with before when I previously volunteered on my free time. Once I settled into a classroom to start, students came in with their books and started to work away at their homework. All but one of the faces seemed familiar, so I checked to see who the new student was.…

When I was 24 years old I decided that I was going to get my high school diploma. My reasoning was simple, at least for me, I wasn’t going to be my children’s excuse for not getting an education. I remember my first day of class I felt geriatric compared to my classmates, but I did not allow this to deter me from my goal. Being in class at times felt like a never-ending struggle, it felt like I had a mountain of homework to climb and it still does even now.
