After having no luck in applying for any respectable newspaper in New York City, Andy receives the opportunity to interview for Runway magazine. As she is an aspiring writer and will do anything to have her voice heard, she applies - only to find out that she will be working as Miranda’s second assistant, not as a writer nor a contributor. Despite being heartlessly humiliated, Andy holds her own and mildly impresses Miranda with her bravado, earning her the job alongside Emily, Miranda’s boss-pleasing first assistant.

Her reputation precedes her and makes her influential - though not necessarily in a good way. She makes people think: think of what the best path is to take in order to be a step closer to Miranda’s level, think of what should be done in order to reach that step, and think of what it is going to take. Also, she saw potential in Andy, who was made fun of relentlessly by her colleagues for not having the same industry knowledge as they did. She found an opportunity to spark that potential and make it flourish. She may not have achieved world peace or ended a long-overdue political dynasty, but she did take a revolutionary step in changing the way women see themselves: from well-dressed dolls to cunning and smart
