“The Custom House,” an excerpt from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter,” defines Romanticism as a type of writing which integrates “the Actual and the Imaginary” to expose life in a new and “unusual light.” According to Hawthorne the best time to write Romantically is when “glancing at the looking glass, we behold… all gleam and shadow of the picture.” In other words, the best time to write a Romantic piece is when looking at life in a clean perspective because that is when all opposition- whether it be “gleam and shadow,” imagination and reason, or opposition in opinions and ideas- becomes as clear as “the looking glass” itself. In this time of clarity and inspiration (from other perspectives), any Romantic author will be able to…

Romantics valued imagination over reason, intuition over fact, and nature over civilization. In “The Devil and Tom Walker”, Washington Irving shows romanticism by giving his soul to the Devil. Tom Walker had made a deal with the devil being on of his usurers. This shows individualism in Tom Walker because rather than making progress himself, the Devil allows Tom to accomplish what he wants within the next day. ““You are my usurer for my money!” said the blacklegs with delight.…

Romanticism was an artistic movement in the 1800s where a group of dreamers wrote about the world around them. They rejected modern society and opted for a peaceful and natural lifestyle away from the busyness of the urban industrial revolution. This is in contrast to the rationalists, who wrote about success of journeys to city life. Unlike the rationalists, romantics such as Washington Irving; Stephen Benet; and Edgar Allen Poe, wrote fantasy-esque stories such as The Devil and Tom Walker, The Devil and Daniel Webster, and The Masque of the Red Death, respectively. Each piece had a supernatural element featuring death as a person.…
