In the story of “The Devil and Tom Walker” many characters have been portrayed as an archetype. Tom Walker was an archetype of greed. Old scratch’s archetype was portrayed as despised and unlikable because of his actions. Tom’s archetype was a greedy man along with his wife who was always miserable. Each character in the story has an archetype that portrays them in the story.
Tom walker one of the main characters in the story was portrayed as a very greedy man in the story. He would never spend money or give money, not only was he greedy but he was miserable. He would very often argue and quarrel with his wife, that’s a trait of being miserable. Tom was greedy with money and things that he found very valuable. As it is proven Tom Walker was a very greedy and miserable archetype in the story.

In the story he is described as big and black, but the author doesn’t tell that he’s either black or Indian so race isn’t determined. Old scratched was clearly unlinked, because many people in the village didn’t like him and he cursed the deacon’s name. At the end of the story when he gets tom walker it clear he was the devil because when he came for tom he sent him to hell. The archetype was proven for old scratch because he was evil and he wasn’t liked by people in the village because everyone knew he was evil.
