For example, Tom gave the devil recognition for killing his wife, “He even felt something like gratitude toward the black woodsman, who he considered had done him a kindness” (8). Tom finding his wife’s heart and liver knew it was the devil’s doing. Thanking the devil after he had killed his wife shows how unacceptable his loyalty was. He should be getting revenge on the devil for his wife being dead. A loved one has just died, and happiness is not the right reaction. Especially when the person you love, or once loved enough to give your life up for is dead. Another person betrayed is the devil, Tom starts to cheat on the deal he made with him. He cheated by deciding to be a holy man after selling his soul away, “ He became, therefore, all of a sudden, a violent church-goer. He prayed loudly and strenuously as if heaven were to be taken by force of lungs” (11). Betrayal is shown because Tom promised the Devil his soul, in order to get what he wanted. The Devil took his end of the deal, and Tom tried to cheat him. Tom cheated by worshiping the Lord, and going to church. He did this to escape from the Devil’s hands. Tom had made the commitment of giving the Devil his soul, yet he tried to escape his promise. Since he did this it shows he can not be trusted.
