One of the major conflict is person verses society. In The Devil and Miss Prym there is two character who are battling against the town. Miss Prym has presented the town with a chance to finally have wealth and to rebuild their failing town, but they need to choose someone to be killed. The town decides to sacrifice the life of Berta, but Prym refused to let an innocent life be taken, just for gold. “You can shoot if you like, but since I know this is trap set up by the stranger, I don 't want nothing to do with this murder.” ( Coelho 95). Prym had to stand up against the town and fight for what she believes is right. Another example of person
DeJong 2 versus society in The Devil and Miss Prym is Berta against the town. She is chosen to be killed in order for the town to be rewarded with the gold bars, she is old and isn’t able to fight. The town would have won, if Prym hadn’t stepped in and saved her. The person verses society conflict shown in “The Lottery” is when Tessie Hutchinson is chosen to be stoned to death at that years lottery. She stood alone in front of the village fighting for her life, “She held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. “It isn’t fair,” she said.” (Jackson 7). She was subjected to a tradition that her village had taken part in for generations, but everyone was blind to the horrific thing they were …show more content…
This philosophy is about how every good thing is accompanied with something bad. In The Devil and Miss Prym, it says “Even God has hell: his love for mankind” (Coehlo 63). Even something as pure, and righteous as God himself, can have a hell. The village of viscos loves their town so much that they’re willing to kill an innocent life just to save it. They believe that Berta is already so old, and she doesn’t have any family left so what they 're doing isn 't a sin. This town that is built on a century old story of how good came to rule their town, is willing to due a terrible crime just to save it. “The Lottery” goes on to display that same philosophy. “The lottery was conducted- as were the square dances, the teen club, the halloween program - by Mr. Summers.” ( Jackson 1). Even with all the good things that happened in the village, they still had the lottery. They continued the lottery every year because it was tradition, and everyone was to afraid to stray from tradition. In both stories the characters are filled with good things, but no good thing can come without evil.
In The Devil and Miss Prym, and “The Lottery” we see how two towns are able to faced with many different conflicts, and whether they choose to do whats morally right, or what they believe is right. The Devil and Miss Prym shows how a town is able to come together to sacrifice a life, but is saved by a single person,
