The two stories each reflect the conflict of Individual versus Society. “The Lottery” does a great job of portraying this conflict. Jackson incorporates many examples of this for such a short story. Jackson points out the method of stoning, “Mr. Dunbar had small stones in both hands, and she said, gasping for breath. "I can't run at all. The novel of The Devil and Miss Prym focuses on choices and the consequences proceeding them. In “The Lottery”, Jackson made sure to implement similar conflict and philosophies. The whole village is faced with the conflict of good vs evil. We see in Coelho’s novel that an individual can be faced up against a society as a whole. Coelho does a better job at using these techniques to build up to the choice. His focus to elaborate on the thought process of the protagonist utilizes these techniques.
