Developmental Milestones Essay

This parent manual is written for parents and caretakers to have the developmental milestones required for a child age of newborn to twelve months old. In the first year, babies learn skills such as taking the first step, smiling for the first time, and waving these are called developmental milestones. The developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age. In the first year, babies learn to focus their vision, reach out, explore, and learn about the things that are around them. Newborns cerebral cortex is the outer folded mantle of the brain responsible for thinking, reasoning and all conscious responses. The infant cortex is what differentiates a human from any other species on earth. The brain quadruples in volume during the first four years of life. A newborn is born with rooting, sucking and grasping reflexes. Their sucking reflex is important because as soon as a newborn is born they are able to drink their breast milk or formula from a baby bottle. Safety measurements for a parent are to not shake your baby because they have a very weak neck. The shaking can also cause severe brain damage their brain and may lead to death. At the age of eight months, children begin to have a realistic understanding of the world. They understand the concept of concrete objects. As soon as an infant begins to crawl they will develop depth perception the ability to see variations in heights. They will develop depth perception to avoid falling when movement begins. This is used so an infant can begin to measure fear; this is needed for protection of getting hurt. At nine months old an infant will be at the first stage of holophrase this is the true stage of speech with one word accompanied by the gesture to complete the word’s meaning. An example would be the infant saying the word Ja meaning I want juice. At nine months old the infant should be picking up toys with a pincer grasp thumb and first finger. To help the infant reach this milestone it is important to buy toys with a cage or netting like texture.
