At eighteen years old, people are considered to be adults and they start their independent journey through life. However, is eighteen the proper age to be considered an adult? Many people believe that the adult age should be moved up because the brain is not fully developed. The brain is very complex, but scientist have discovered many things about the brain; such as brain development in teens to adults. The adult age should be moved up to the age of twenty-five because at twenty-five a person’s brain is fully developed, all the grey matter in the brain is pruned out, and people no longer give into peer pressure. The grey matter in the brain must be pruned out to help make a more efficient brain. According to Nitin Gogtay, “Excess gray matter is pruned out, making brain connections more specialized and efficient” (Growing a Grown-up Brain). The grey matter in a brain takes up space before the brain is fully developed. However, after the grey matter is pruned out one can have a fully developed brain. Such as the development in thinking, “Regions in the front that control higher thinking don’t finish the pruning process until the early 20s” Growing a Grown-Up Brain). In someone's early twenties the grey matter is pruned out and they can start more critical thinking. Therefore, one must wait until their twenties to acquire all the proper brain matter to start being independent and start thinking higher. Consequently leaving people on their own when they do not are not ready; teens and young adults do not understand the cause and effect, pros and cons, and other essential life lessons. Teens and young adults need a little more time to be fully developed and be prepared to be indepent. Realize that teens are not capable of higher thinking so they mess up on
