Chapter 19 Technology in the Early 20th Century
The strength and creativity of the technological enterprise turned into the most pervasive characteristic of the twentieth century. Many of the inventions of this time led to increased production of capital goods and many of them touched directly on the quality and style of life of the human species, specifically in America. Three areas with major technological advancements during the beginning of the twentieth century were advances in transportation technology, communication technology, and scientific technology.
The transportation technology of the early 20th century not only made distant places more accessible, but allowed the general public to become more mobilized than they had previously been. Waiting times were shorter than they ever had been before and this meant that people could accomplish more in their daily lives. An invention that drastically changed access to music and access to news was the instantaneous radio, which became a popular household idem in the early nineteen hundreds. In previous years, newspaper and word of mouth were the only ways for people to find out about major events happening worldwide, but with the radio appearing, news traveled much faster. (Spodek 651) By 1907, there were 6 million telephones in existence making it possible to talk to family members of friends long distances away instantaneously. Movie theaters as well as other community buildings and activities trended, spreading increasing personal communication where families, children, or friend groups could publicly have something to get out of their house and go do.
