Nursing as a profession has the largest nation’s health care workforce with more than 3 million members. Being at the center of patient care, the part nurses play towards achieving the objectives set by the 2010 Affordable Care Act cannot be over emphasized. Some challenges has posed as an hindrance on the part of nursing which prevents the profession from meeting up with the pace of change and evolution presently going on within the healthcare settings and there is a need to overcome these obstacles. According to IOM, transformation of the healthcare system depends on the fundamental rethink of the roles of nurses as a member of health care professional among other factors as this will help meet the demand for safe, quality, and affordable care. In the report provided by the IOM, challenges faced by nurses in response to adopting new roles towards the transformation of the health care in the US were considered. Though, nurses face many challenges at all levels of practice, the focus was more on limitations faced by advance practice registered nurses (APRNs) as a result of some state’s laws inhibiting them from practicing to the full level of education and training received. For nurses to attain the level of responsibility expected during this period, such limitations have to be removed. Also, there has been recent discovery in the health care system which reveals the trend of change from the previously specialty care to patient-centered care through primary care, reaching out into the community more as compared to the acute settings.
