Debate continues every day whether the presence of nuclear weapons does any good. Does having nuclear weapons give citizens a sense of safety? The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons has many large scale nuclear superpowers like the United States and Russia. This is a “treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.”13 Some countries like India, Israel, and Pakistan have not signed the treaty, yet still have nuclear weapons that raise concern. The world has seen the devastation that nuclear weapons can cause from the events of World War II. Knowing that mass destruction can occur at the push of a button strikes fear in the world.
