Felt through the racing of heartbeats, possessed by longing gazes, and conversed with poetic words, love crumbles at the reckless hands of lovers. In Shakespeare’s tragedy, two star crossed lovers find themselves mocked by fate, and while their passion is sincere and promises are sweet, they are not able to conquer the walls that their families’ feud has set up against them. In the end, they take their own lives after trying to escape the schemes that the stars had planned for them. Only two other characters possess the knowledge of dear Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love, and perhaps that alone should have saved their cursed souls. Romeo and Juliet were destined to cross each other’s paths, and though they did not have a happy ending, their reckless and imperfect love exceeds the limited time they shared. The nurse and Friar Laurence’s careless support for Romeo and Juliet’s scandalous relationship allowed for the lovers’ rash decisions to continue until both laid dead in the Capulets’ tomb. When Balthasar informs Romeo of Juliet’s apparent death, Romeo proclaims without hesitation, “Then I defy you stars!” even though he knows of the risks he would be taking on by going back to Verona. Love is like a burning candle, similarly to being careful and gentle towards a flame, love must be held with great care. Reckless actions such as that of the four characters represents the wavering and flickering of the fragile flame until it’s burned out completely from all the careless thrashing (alliteration). Romeo and Juliet’s love may have been indefinite, it may have been everlasting, but their irrational actions wasted whatever amount of time their love had left. Therefore, don’t blame love for being difficult, don’t insult lovers for trying too much, but like fire, when you play with and tempt it too much, there will be consequences.
