The Destruction Of Honesty In Shakespeare's Othello

Perform the speech just as I showed you, clearly and smoothly. If you want to speak louder as bad actors usually do, I might willingly look for a newscaster to read the lines for me. Don’t overuse too many hand gestures; just do as few as possible, moderately, like this. If a powerful tempest of passion comes on you while you are on stage, keep your emotions moderate and smooth. I deeply hate a wig wearing, a bombastic actor that tears a passion into shreds, bursting everyone’s ears to impress the audience on the lower levels of the playhouse. Most of these people only appreciate loud noises and meaningless gesture shows. I would punish an actor for making a tyrant sound too tyrannical. That really is as bad as those antiqued plays

In this specific soliloquy, Shakespeare utilizes the word “honesty” to help portray the type of man Iago isn't and the type of man Othello believes he is not. By letting himself be influenced by Iago's lies, Othello shows how being too trusting and putting your trust into someone you deem to be “of exceeding honesty” (3.3.263) can lead to you to your ruin. Because Othello is of trusting nature and he believes Iago to be an honest man it was easy for Iago to execute his plan and manipulate othello to create his own destruction. The etymology of the word “honesty” defines someone as being of "honorable position; propriety of behavior, good manners; virginity, chastity. "…

Truth is an expectation of society. It is discourse to have and display an exorbitant amount of honesty. However, perceptions of truth are shaped by an individual's internal truth as they adhere to societal discourse in their own way. The expectations held by society become warped by individuals who endeavour to abide by their own inner truth, thus consequently neglecting what is the true discourse. The alliance of a person's inner truth with society can change, as demonstrated by Shakespeare in Othello.…

Deception “O Lord, deliver me from the man of excellent intention and impure heart: for the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked,” stated T.S. Eliot a renowned American poet and playwright. This quote is the basis for several inferences, the main one being that people are deceptive and often have malicious intentions. This inference is quite realistic too as illustrated through two texts: The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger and Othello by William Shakespeare. A common theme that prevails in both books is that several characters are manipulative and affect the protagonist in negative ways. These deceptive people are often closely affiliated with the main character – as a friend, advisor and a parental figure.…

Reputation is a concept that can make or break a man. In Shakespeare’s Othello, the damage that can be caused by reputation, or the lack of it, is very severe and is evident through the characterisation of Michael Cassio. The phrase, looks may be deceiving, is a commonly used phrase used to explain that something or somebody may appear and act in one way to you, and be completely different to somebody else. This appears all the time in our day to day little white lies we all tell, and some of these little fibs may seem small but really play a role in a much larger issue. In the novel “Othello”, by William Shakespeare, the main antagonist, Iago, may seem to be a kind and wise advisor to many, but what is known to none, save it himself, is that he begins to play with everyone's stories and emotions to put himself in a place of power. Othello and his newly wedded wife, Desdemona, move to Cyprus due to othello’s military presence being needed in the very beginning of the story. He has two friends in Cyprus; Iago and Cassio.…

Truth is Not What it is Truth is the reality of what has happened, however, the road to understanding truth is not always straightforward and smooth. This is because one person may perceive the truth one way, while another perceives the truth differently, so, their truths are different. In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the steps towards discovering the real truth are discussed, and these concepts are present in William Shakespeare’s Othello. The characters created by Shakespeare in Othello struggle to understand the real truth while Iago manipulates their perception the truth with relative ease.…

    2. a. Quote: “a man...of honesty and trust” (I.iii.223) b. Analysis: Shakespeare litters instances of dramatic irony throughout his play, especially whenever someone labels Iago as “honest.” From an outsider’s perspective, it is almost unrealistic how every character is able to fall prey so easily to Iago’s ploys and tricks. Perhaps it is Othello’s honesty and trusting heart that ironically blinds him from the deceitful manners of Iago. Othello is portrayed as one who follows the regulations and expectations established by the society, thus it would make sense that he chooses to believe in the good of everybody.…

Phonies, or a fake people are those with multiple identities. These people act different in public and private, or in different groups of people. Phonies have been criticized in literature for hundreds of years, but one of the most notable times, and possible the first time it was criticized was in Shakespeare's Othello. Shakespeare uses characters in Othello, such as Iago, Othello and Desdemona, to show how the worst of people usually have an extreme difference in their identities, while the most genuine people only have one identity. Shakespeare purposefully makes some characters in Othello have differences in their public and private identity, which reveals how genuine, loyal and irreproachable characters in Othello, and people in real life, actually are.…
