The Desert Lynx

Decent Essays
In the Namibian Farmlands, livestock farmers are killing off a predator called the Desert Lynx, which is mostly known as the Caracal. This resulted in more than 2000 deaths by approximately 1952. This is due to the outcome of livestock predation: the identification of the predator involved in killing livestock or animals. Although many of the farmers view the Caracal as a liability, they are more advantageous than they think. Their diet tends to sway easily away from livestock and they can eat a variety of animals like mice and hares. Livestock like cows and horses are not even the main food source for them. These cats also protect livestock territory from other predators that would prey on those animals. To eliminate the Desert Lynx would

Emma Marris presents us with a new way of viewing nature in the first chapter of her book, “Rambunctious Garden”. She explains that the definition of nature depicted in our “glossy magazines” describing a place “somewhere distant, wild and free” is incorrect, as it “blinds us” from the truth (Marris 1). Marris argues that we must adjust this definition to also include the nature found in “the bees whizzing down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan” and “the butterfly bushes that grow alongside the urban river” as well as the nature found in “managed national parks” (Marris 2). She uses experiences gained during her time spent in the forests of Hawaii and in Australia’s Scotia Sanctuary as evidence to support her argument. Marris also makes the point…

The feral hogs, also known as the wild pigs are invasive animals that were introduced to North and South America. The feral hogs were brought to North America primarily by the colonies during their trade from Europe. They were first introduced to the southern part of the United States by the Spanish colonies. However, the feral hogs’ population got out of control and escaped to the eastern part of the US, which led to an increase of their numbers. The population of feral hogs kept increasing, and what helped their massive expansion was the illegal trade and translocations of feral hogs by humans.…

In 2012, zoologist Peter Menkhorst conducted a study to investigate the claims that large predatory cats inhabit Victoria. This was done to satisfy the many claims of large cat sightings and reports of the animals attacking and eating livestock. Menkhorst concluded that: “The most parsimonious explanation for many of the reported sightings is that they involve large, feral individuals of the Domestic Cat Felis catus. However, some evidence cannot be dismissed entirely, including preliminary DNA evidence, footprints and some behaviours that seem to be outside the known behavioural repertoire of known predators in Victoria.”…

Animals and plants all of the world help each other in a certain way. Some more than others but they all benefit from one another. I claim that changes to living/non-living parts of an ecosystem do impact populations within the ecosystem. With the cat, Lynx, there was a lot of things it helps with.…

The main operating concern of all species in any ecosystem or natural environment is rooted in the battle for survival. This constant battle for survival is most highlighted in the two main modes of species interaction; categorized as predation or competition. This research focused on applying biological mathematics to analyzing predation relationships, especially the relationship between the Canadian Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare. This predation relationship is quite special, because these species interact in a relatively isolated manner compared to others, meaning their populations fluctuated in a regular cycle due to lack of significant external variables on the relationship. These population fluctuations can be defined and analyzed mathematically…

    Why Killing Coyotes

The title of the article "Why Killing Coyotes Doesn't Make Livestock Safe" is an effective hook because it draws in readers from both sides of the debate it discusses. Conservationists will be concerned with wildlife populations, and owners of livestock will be interested in the safety of their own animals. Megan M. Draheim's article follows up on its title with a startling introduction: the US government's Wildlife Services killed more than 70,000 coyotes in the year of 2016. Despite the fact that Wildlife Services is more than capable of utilizing methods of predator repellent that do not kill wild animals, they proceed with extermination. Wildlife Services mediates between wildlife and humans, trying to find compromises between the two.…

The sheriff's office warned residents to stay in their homes and recommended that local schools close, and a sign on the Interstate cautioned motorists to stay in their vehicles. Forty-eight animals were subsequently shot and killed by sheriff's deputies-two wolves, six black bears, two grizzly bears, 18 tigers, three cougars, and 17 African lions.
