The Demon Lover Essay

“The Demon Lover,” the title of two similar short stories about evil men. I have certain claims about what I think each character is like, both men and women in the ballad and story. I will describe what each plot is like in both stories. I will explain each story's theme. I will also point out what each mood is like. The characters in the story are Mrs. Drover and her fiance. I feel like Mrs. Drover is a woman who is brave. Mrs. Drover is brave because she wanted to return to her house in London during war times. She leaves the safety of the countryside to go back to her original home she evacuated. Mrs. Drover does this for her family, for one of her boys who has a serious illness. The fiance is evil, because he had never really been kind to Mrs. Drover. He had left a weal on Mrs. Drover’s hand upon leaving her. The characters in the ballad are the man and woman. The man was the devil, but also was the woman’s fiance (seven years ago). I felt the man was loyal to his marriage vows and kept his promise to marry the woman by not getting married to a “king’s daughter,” and coming back to her. Unlike the man, the woman had moved on and got married to another, therefore not keeping her …show more content…

The novel Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins may seem like a typical young adult fiction story to those who do not read deeper into the story. However, upon examination, an important life lesson can be extracted from this book. In this series, the main character Anna Whitt discovers that she is half-demon and half-angel. Following this realization, she struggles with the good and evil inside of her. At the end of this novel, Anna comes to terms with who she is with the encouragement from her boyfriend Kaidan and accepts that being part demon does not deem her as an evil person.…

Thus, despite his liaisons he always finds himself coming back to her. Yet, she is not content with this relationship. Her repetition of “I can do this” comes with a lack of sincerity. Just because she comes off as pure and sweet does not make it so. She clearly desires the man in the poem, she clearly disapproves of his womanizing.…

Mrs. Drover in “The Demon Lover” then goes through the atonement with the father as she “meets” the author of the letter. Her first encounter with the author comes when she first opens the letter and reads who signs it. Ultimately, this person who writes the letter holds control over her life in which would literally mean life or death. In a way, if the author of the letter can be Mrs. Drover herself, she controls her life unknowingly in a similar manner as Dorian Gray, but she has more free-will. The theme of being the sole controller of one’s own life becomes apparent through these two pieces of work that further pushes both characters along in the journey.…

The Prioress’s Tale takes place in a small Asian town with a small ghetto at the end of the street where terrible things against Christ happened. A school was opened on the road and was open to all children, one who was a widow's son, devoted to his faith. They learned songs in Latin giving praise to the Virgin Mary and reverence to Christ. Singing a song on the way home, the boy angered the Jews of the city, who worshiped Satan. They hired a murderer who slit the boy's throat and threw him into a pit.…

The Romantic Period lasted from 1785-1832. During this time, the Democratic Revolution in France launched, which was the French Revolution. This revolution caused and shaped the Romantic period to be political, social, and economic with all three drastic changes. During the Romantic Period, many authors wrote poems, with a lot of emotion of love, passion and strong messages that we can now relate with in this livelihood. The two works I selected to work with caught my attention because both poems showed a lot of suspense and were similar in various ways.…

Helen Rocha Per.2 SAHC:HR By looking at the Knight's and Miller's Tale in Geoffrey Chaucer's work of fiction Canterbury Tales 1476, one can see the distinctions between love and lust, and the tragic and comic endings desire, temptation, and ones emotional necessities may lead the human mind to. The Knight who portrays humorous aristocracy among pilgrims, introduces a courtly love tale that represents his social class. The Miller on the contrary represents the middle class in Medieval England, and coveys a fabliau tale, completely distinct from the Knight's tale. Both tales introduce the conventions of romance, and upshot of desire. While one tale engages on a spiritual meaningful convention of love, the other engages in sexual drive and the humiliation lechery may bring to ones table for the rest of their living.…

The short fiction piece I chose to analyze was “Little Man” by Michael Cunningham. According to The New Yorker, “Little Man” reinvents “Rumpelstiltskin.” The last time I read “Rumpelstiltskin” was an awfully long time ago, so after reading “Little Man,” I revisited my Tales from Grim children’s book and read “Rumpelstiltskin” to understand the parallels. The stories are quite similar, but they do have slight differences.…

Throughout the Victorian Age, an expectation was placed on women to fulfill their domesticity role. Though a Victorian woman was to remain in the home, she could express herself through singing, weaving, and other artistic outlets. As Greenblatt expresses, “Victorian society was preoccupied not only with legal and economic limitations on women’s lives, but with the very nature of woman” (1957). Furthermore, society expected women to remain obedient, while appearing inferior to their husbands, just as Linda Gill expresses by saying, “A woman’s power was very limited, and her subjectivity was only granted if it were appropriatable by and contained within traditional and patriarchally determined narrative structures” (111). In Robert Browning’s…

The World’s Wife is a collection of poetry that successfully challenges society’s preconceptions of what it means to be a woman. While the female voice is often silenced, Duffy focuses on the women who were in the midst of male-centric stories in Biblical, mythological and fairytale narratives. Some may argue that the expectations of women are completely subverted in poems such as The Devil’s Wife, in which the maternal and nurturing image of a woman is replaced by the disturbing portrayal of the infamous child serial killer Myra Hindley. Alternatively, some feminine qualities are also explored in this poem, such as a woman’s dependence on men, as demonstrated by Hindley’s twisted, passionate love for Ian Brady.…

I agree with the doctrinal distinction of total depravity. This doctrinal belief comes from the Reformed tradition. Total depravity means that humans are completely wicked and morally corrupt. This means that human nature is fully dead. Without Christ, it is not possible to have true life because of the depravity of humans.…
