In the movie, 12 Years a Slave a 2013 film that follows the life of a man who was once a free man and was kidnapped and sold into slavery. In the film we see many instances where slavery had a dehumanizing effect on other slaves. I examined a scene about 45 minutes into the film which shows the main character Solomon Northup who goes by “Platt” was out on the plantation in Louisiana building a house for other slaves to live in when the plantation overseer came over to him and told him he was using the wrong nails to build the house. Solomon insisted that he was using the right nails and the two of them argued for a few moments until the overseer told him that he needed to strip because he was going to whip him. Solomon refused to strip …show more content…
The overseer and Solomon began to fight and Solomon was able to grab the whip from the overseer and started to hit the overseer with the whip. After they fought for a while, the owner of the plantation came over to see what was going on and was surprised to see that a slave was fighting the overseer. The overseer told Solomon that he “would not live to see another day” and then walked back to the house. The owner of the plantation, who previously praised Solomon for finding a more efficient way of shipping logs down stream, was supportive of Solomon and told him that he should, “Stay where you are or else I cannot help you.” Solomon followed the master's orders and stayed by the house being built. After a long period of time, the overseer and two other white men approach Solomon and take him too a tree. When they get to the tree, they set up a noose and they were going to hang Solomon. While the overseer was trying to hang Solomon, the master came back once again and told the white men that if they kill Solomon they would be killed also. The men then leave the scene but Solomon is still dangling from the tree to the point where he can barely touch the ground. The master then leaves the scene and Solomon is still hanging

The novel was closely followed throughout the film, not sparing the viewer any graphic detail. As with all historical recollection, there cannot be 100% accuracy, and 12 Years A Slave is no exception. There are moments throughout the film where one may question the actuality of that scene, but for the most the movie sticks to a historically accurate experience. 12 Years A Slave follows Solomon Northrop throughout his…

Although some slaves would look at their owners in a paternalistic view, some hated their owner and anyone that dealt with slavery. When Solomon got off the boat, Theophilus Freeman, a slave trader, called role and when he said Platt, Solomon acted as if he did not hear a thing. This was a common form of resistance that usually ended in punishment. Resistance wasn’t an uncommon thing during slavery but with all the harsh treatment, that isn’t surprising. Although they lived a rough life as a slave they tried to find happiness in anything they can, even a corn husk doll.…

One of the first reasons on how slaves were dehumanized was that Americans brought their slaves to the United States chained up like animals and against their own will. They would fit multiple slaves in ships with not a lot of room, without giving them an adequate supply of food and water to live off of. According to the book, The Interesting Narrative of The Life of Olaudah Equiano, they were chained so close that they weren’t able to move around. As these slaves were chained up and little room to move they had to use the restroom on themselves and also eat in the same place causing the slaves to receive diseases due to all the toxins in their human droppings. Those that survived during the long ship ride were what the Americans needed.…

In the 1800s era, free blacks, slaves, and whites alike all faced deadly infirmities with basic medicine. During this time, diseases ravaged both the North and the South, however, the South seemed to get the worst of it. The South would have cases of malaria, yellow fever, cholera, bilious remittent fever, autumnal fever, tibircuois and respiratory diseases. It was common for breakouts of these illnesses, although some plagues seemed to affect one race worse than the other. Yellow fever tended to affect whites with European heritage while cholera affected both free blacks and enslaved blacks.…

But Douglass argues that these slaves, these people, were treated with utter disrespect as if they weren’t even human. When describing how slaves were overworked, he says, “There must be no halting… Mr. Severe, the overseer, used to stand by the door of the quarter, armed with a large hickory stick and heavy cowskin, ready to whip any one who was so unfortunate…” This piece from his narrative shows that not only were the slaves over worked, doing enforced labor from the earliest signs of daylight until it was pitch black in the night, but they were also punished very severely. This makes slave holders look very evil and cruel, especially after they claimed they treated slaves like humans.…

Freeman’s obsession with money has blinded him from sympathy and compassion. Unlike Freeman and Burch, Ford feels sympathetic towards his slaves. For this reason, Solomon highly respects Ford because he provides the slaves with the same respect he gives to the white community. Ford allows his slaves to take breaks and rest whenever they need and also provides them with plenty of food and shelter. Many of the slaveholders in the south are cruel and show no concern for their slaves.…

This story explores the question up for popular debate concerning the role of black men in society.
