Gregor is a travelling salesman and as time goes on, his infatuation with his job continues and seems to make him less personal and much more mechanical, eventually dehumanizing him. He develops an “a prudent habit... acquired in traveling of locking all the doors during the night” (497), which he brings back to his home. This emphasizes the separation between him and his family. However, we come to realize that Gregor hates his job and describes it as “exhausting... irritating work” (495) and he hates that he has to travel so often just to be treated badly by his boss. The only reason that Gregor stays in his position at work is to help with his parents’ debts but he still hopes to end up doing something else that is better someday. But when he became a bug, he is alienated from the very money driven economy they live in, where the societal rule is that if you are unproductive, you become repulsive and unimportant. Being a bug, which prevents Gregor from earning money in order to support his family, reinforces the idea that he is disgusting to both society and his family. His personal value seems to merely be financial and now his relation with his family has been reduced just like his economic worth. The idea that he is just a welfare source ultimately alienates him from his family. Gregor gradually changes into an outsider but his family doesn’t notice because they are only interested in his delivery of funds for them. Although there are moments …show more content…
Franz Kafka reflects his idea of society through Gregor’s isolation and alienation by displaying how Gregor is ostracized from his family and society and is forced to become an outsider. Kafka also shows how Gregor’s job causes his alienation from what was most important in his life such as, true family, friends, and even love. In the short story The Metamorphosis Gregor wakes to find he has turned into a huge bug. As the story progresses, bit by bit Gregor loses the qualities that make him human. I believe this dehumanizing process started as he started realizing he could not do things he would normally do. The first example is when Gregor could not sleep on his side as he was accustomed to. “this proved utterly impossible, for it was his habit to sleep on his right side, and in his present state he was unable to assume this position.…

Critical Exercise #1 In Franz Kafka’s magic realism story, The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa struggles against isolation due to his work schedule consuming most of his life and the lack of acceptance he feels from his family. Due to Gregor’s situation, he has multiple epiphanies such as, where he realizes that his job takes up most of his life and is unable to form any intimate relationships with another individual. Another, instance is where Gregor battles against himself to succumb to his natural tendencies of a bug, or try to maintain what human aspects he has left. Finally, the last epiphany is when he has no regrets passing away for his family, and realizes this is the only way to help them. Ultimately, through Gregor’s epiphanies he acknowledges his own self-awareness that he is a burden to his family, and thus…

At first, there is the stage of initial shock and disbelief when the family enters Gregor’s room to see why he has not come out only to flee at the sight of him as a bug. Following that stage comes the attentive stage in which Gregor is fed and watched carefully to see if his appetite has changed. Also, at this point Gregor is still considered their son and brother. However, this stage declines into the stage of resentment in which Gregor and his room are neglected and his family no longer wants the responsibility of taking care of him. As Gregor’s room became more and more like a “junk heap” that Gregor had to push through, a metaphor for the families rejection, Gregor did not even have “room enough to crawl” (117).…

Tragically for Gregor, this belief is shattered as he begins to realize he is not as important to his family as he thought. After the failure of his father 's business, it is explained that "Gregor 's sole desire was to do his utmost to help the family to forget as soon as possible the catastrophe that had overwelmed the business and thrown them all into a state of complete despair." There are many autobiographical elements in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, as striking similarities and parallels can be drawn between Gregor Samsa and Franz Kafka, whose names are very similar in letter count and sound. This use of name parallel is common for autobiographical fiction, as seen in Bioshock’s parallel to Atlas Shrugged, employing the use of Andrew Ryan in stead of Ayn Rand. The family and situation depicted in The Metamorphosis mirrors that of Kafka’s real life. Like Gregor, Kafka disliked his authoritarian father, and felt compelled to work a job he disliked in order to financially support his family.…
