It is ironic that Baldwin saw this specific film because in many ways the America he lived in isn’t the bastion of freedom the film makes it out to be. During the pre-Civil Rights era, several methods were successfully used to suppress the rights of African Americans in the United States, such as poll taxes, literacy tests, segregation and Jim Crow Laws. Also, illegal methods were used to intimidate blacks from practicing their freedoms, such as lynchings and burning crosses. Hence, with history and Baldwin’s experience with discrimination, Baldwin utilizes this movie in his…

My first reason is because of his background. After being born into and abolished family he left to go join the Union and fight to free slaves. This could be hard if your parents are for slaves because you wouldn't want to disappoint the people that love you the most, so it took a lot of courage. I also believe it was difficult to lead the first black regiment in the north after all the discrimination going on at the time, and that is a good reason to get nominated into the Civil war Hall of Fame. (“Robert Gould Shaw”)…

I hardly have words for this scene. I can’t imagine the fear that black people of this time must have gone through being alive in a world that puts no value on their lives. Its ridiculous how white people would consider black people lesser citizens while they were the ones attacking people for no reason other than their skin color. From just watching black people try to live white people turned into the violent animals that they depicted black people as. Cecil has a conversation with the president, John F. Kennedy, very soon after the attacks.…
