This essay will focus on #2. Do you agree with Christina Sommers that ethics classes are currently focusing too much on public policy and too little on private morality? Explain. Value is a person’s principles or standard of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life. Ethics is defined as the morality or a moral principle that governs a person’s or group’s behavior. Values education, (Powney), “is the process by which people gives values to others. For instance, Miller House’ employees are not treating its residents accordingly. But then, she’s questioning about the integrity and morality of these types of civic agencies and its workers when in fact, it shouldn’t been of these employee’s moral obligation and responsibility to take care of their elders in the first place. Although, it is wrong that the “residents” were being “mistreated” as she puts it, what could be worse than putting these elders to a strange house with other people? What I’m trying to say is that, it is one’s moral responsibility that needs to be straightened out first. It is our moral obligation to care for our families; elders, young ones, and anyone in between. We first learn good manners at home. Nourished in schools and influenced by churches and other organizations. Therefore, if we we’re not taught good values at home, there is no virtue to be nourished and to be influenced but rather unacceptable when you go to the community. Consciously, what we thought as righteous is actually dreadful.
In my opinion, ethics classes are doing what they can to enhance the moral values of the students but unfortunately, there is nothing much to improve because good values were not built on a strong foundation. People with very little moral are usually easily-influenced by outside forces. This type of people normally believes what they are being told to or does whatever they’re asked to do. They can’t decide for themselves in any given situation. Mostly, they rely on somebody else to make a choice for them. Unfortunately, we can’t change them but help them out to go back to the first stage if there’s still a
