To help students struggling with behavior problems it’s important to create a positive and structured environment and reward desired behaviors. There are a variety of ways to support kids struggling with managing their emotions and behaviors and it’s important to support that growth towards more positive behaviors. Some ways to support behaviors is using different tools like the token economy, a behavior chart, the lottery system, and a positive peer review. Teaching kids who have emotional and behavioral problems can be challenging but with these tools you can support and encourage positive behaviors. Token Economy is a tool where students earn points or tokens every time they demonstrate a positive behavior. At a certain point their tokens can be used to “purchase” a prize or reward at the token store. This tool is to be used with an entire class and if a student behaves in a positive way they earn a ticket with their name on it. That ticket is then placed in a basket and the teacher will draw a name out once or twice a week. Whatever name is drawn out they will receive the prize. This tool is effective because it encourages students to have positive behaviors so they are more likely to have their name drawn and win the prize.
The final tool is a positive peer review tool that is to be used with students and their classmates. This tool is a way for students to watch their peers and identify who is demonstrating positive behaviors. Both the student who identifies the peer for the positive behavior and the student who is demonstrating the positive behavior will be rewarded.
Each of these tools is an effective way to increase the positive behaviors and eliminate the negative but there are also modifications and adaptions you can use to help them succeed in the environment. It’s important to keep in mind that each child with emotional behavioral disorder will have different needs.
