Caution And Honesty: The Importance Of Virtues

Improved Essays
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, virtuous means morally good; having or showing virtue. The definition of virtue is morally good behavior or character. What makes a person virtuous is how they behave and uphold their responsibilities, obligations or duties. There are four virtues a person must have to be reflected as virtuous. These four qualities are caution, restraint, honesty, and courage. The virtues of caution and honesty are closely connected. This is because one cannot exist without a person portraying the other as well. Virtue towards God is the beginning of understanding. It is correct to think that caution is the basis of all virtues. Caution can be defined as stopping and thinking before reacting to a situation. Before reacting or having restraint one must stop and think. Before deciding if a situation is honest or not one must stop and think. Before having the strength or courage to act on something we must stop …show more content…
Sometimes this is a difficult task in itself because in today’s society, mothers and fathers are not living in the same home anymore. The divorce rate is so much higher now and children are being shuffled from one parent’s home to the other. In order to be committed to your child’s life, as parents, we often have to make sacrifices. We make sacrifices in order to be more than a just a ride and a meal ticket to our kids. Although these sacrifices are important and allow us to be present for our children, it is not enough. Talking with your kids can help them make more informed decisions in their lives. But as anyone who has spent any time with a child knows, a 30-minute moralistic lecture on virtue will go in one ear and out the other. We must bring the discussion down to their level, one that they can relate to and they don’t feel like they are being lectured or talked down

Many people mistake the word “integrity” to hold the same weight as the word “honesty;” however, Oxford Dictionary defines integrity as: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” Therefore, we can conclude that being honest is only a part of having integrity, so just because someone says what he or she means, doesn’t mean that this person has integrity. In “The Insufficiency of Honesty,” Stephen L. Carter discusses the misconception that many people have about the difference between honesty and integrity by presenting examples of how people that are completely honest lack a sense of moral behavior. Through a clearly reasoned discussion, Carter raises some insightful points about how honesty alone cannot make someone or some action morally correct.…

In the essay "The Insufficiencey of Honesty," the Stephen L. Carter divides his essay into three major categories. One category mentioned in his essay was titled Telling Everything You Know. In this category, he discussed how being completely honest can be negitave because it can cause harm and place burdens on others. I completley agree with this statement because there are some things that should not be mentioned in respect of other people's emotions. Ultimately, this shows that while an individual is honest, they may not be displaying integrety at the same…

In situations of injustice, do you stand on the side of justice or on the side of the oppressor? This is a question that many people had to ask themselves in the south during the 1930’s and The Great Depression. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, an ambitious lawyer and single father to his two children, Jeremy “Jem” and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, most definitely stands on the side of equality and expresses this through his words and actions. Even though Atticus is a non traditional parent: he is old, formal, and often leaves his children alone with his chef or sister, he works hard for the town of Maycomb and state legislature while making as much time as possible devoted to his family.…

Everyone differs in moral and intellectual virtues, therefore the virtuous person is different from person to person. For example, someone religious may use Jesus as their virtuous person in a situation whereas someone not as religious may choose a role model such as Martin Luther King Jr as their virtuous person. For this example, we will say the virtuous person is Jesus Christ. As Jesus Christ, he believes that all lives are equally important and lives must be preserved at all cost if it is in their power. He also believes the way to living prosperously is by helping others.…

In Robert Coles’ article, I Listen to My Parents and I Wonder What They Believe, he argues children perceive ethical issues and need guidance to develop their moral principles. Coles interviews numerous children and asks them questions regarding their moral beliefs. He uses the children’s moral questions and answers as evidence for his argument. Coles urges parents to engage with their children’s moral education to help their children avoid finding ‘wrong’ answers, and to help them establish a moral framework to discern the ‘right’ answers. Parents who ignore their children’s moral questions deny their children an opportunity to develop a moral standard which enables them to evaluate ethics.…

Parenting is not an easy task to master, however, they play an important role in their children’s early years. Every child has parents, which are necessary for a good childhood. As a result, parents should be the best they can be. What makes the perfect parent? Countless magazines and websites strive to answer the question but often possess differing opinions on what techniques and parenting styles will foster the ideal child. In Chaim Potok’s novel, The Chosen, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders grow up in polar opposite households. While both practice Judaism, their separate sects often highlight differences in their respective upbringings. Literature mimics real life and while reading, I found myself comparing the boys’ friendship to that of my closest friend and I.…

Overparenting has been a controversial topic for quite some time, all the way back to Romeo and Juliet. On a day to day basis, these “helicopter parents” can be recognized, either dousing their children in hand sanitizer or complaining to their children’s teacher about the children’s poor test grade. Most people consider overprotective parenting unnecessary. Children need to grow and experience everything for themselves. Conversely, that calls to mind the question of how much freedom children should receive.…

Some people say and think that everybody is born with good and other people like Mary Wollstonecraft think that humans acquire those high morals and good through life, specifically with life experiences. In her famous letter, “ A Vindication of the Rights of Men, in a Letter to the Right Honorable Edmund Burke, occasioned by his Reflection on the Revolution in France” she explained that this good called virtue is demonstrated trough three important factors; wisdom, and morals. The definition of virtue is very simple; it’s the quality of doing things right and avoiding things that are wrong. Nobody can give you that quality or characteristic, you need experiences to learn what’s wrong and what’s good and then apply those lessons in your life.…

In this world there is a diversity in the human behaviour. Some people show good manners and character, whilst others do not. However, what is often forgotten and to some extend taken for granted, is that a great person does not immerge out of now where. It is through care and nurture from the parents that conditions the child’s willingness to show kindness and respond positively to discipline. Yet the arts of parenthood cannot be taught or understood by everyone, and results to an imbalance in the parenting, where it is either too loose or too uptight.…
