Romantic Love An essential definition of romantic love does not exist; the attached meaning of love may be different to a person who is in a relationship from a person who has never been committed to a partner. It encompasses a wide range of strong emotions felt by different individuals; some may define it as floating in cloud 9 while some may define it as a pain in the neck. Indeed, the definition of romantic love is an undying question to everybody on how one should define it. If I were asked with this question, I would say – although it may sound cliché – that
“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails . . . He sees her wife as an “overscrupulous housewife (502),” yet it turns out that she is not the kind of woman he thought she is. Calixta had a one night affair with her former lover while Bobinot is away with their son; surprisingly, it does not seem to bother her because she even “lifted her pretty chin in the air and laughed aloud (502)” when his other man drove away. It is ironic how Bobinot prepared explanations and apologies before reaching home while it is Calixta who is supposed to be thinking of a reasonable excuse for what she has done. The story’s ending – “storm passed and everyone was happy (503)” – only seemed to be a façade because it does not show the underlying truth of what has happened during the storm. I suppose that happiness was just a pretense, for it masked Calixta’s infidelity to her
