Throughout history and even today heroism has been based around somewhat of the same idea. To society a hero is someone that goes out of their way to help someone else, they are seen as brave and courageous and usually people that are well known. Many people in occupations like police officer, firefighter, military, political leader and social movement leader are highly looked at as heroes because of the things they contribute to the community. Although the current societal definition of heroism is accurate, there are some parts of the definition that could use a little tweaking to focus on a more modern aspect.

Although these aspects of the word ‘heroism’ still fit into the term, there are other aspects that would make the definition better. A new definition of heroism should still include selfless people who benefit others and also take risks but should also include more caretakers, people in everyday life, who are praised or seen for all the things they do for others. As society changes over time the definition should also follow with the changes that are being made; women have become a colossal role throughout society, but still aren’t seem much when talking about heroes in society and they should be. Heroes should include all genders, races, and everyone what so ever. Equality has become an immense part when looking at societal changes the definition of a hero should follow.

In Zimbardo’s article “We Need a Hero” he describes a hero as having “integrity, compassion, and moral courage’s, heightened by an understanding of the power of situational forces” (Zimbardo 25). These are the traits of someone who is a hero that are very important in defining what a hero actually is. Heroes should have compassion for others with an understanding of power because when they are put in a position where they can choose to be a hero they will pick that choice and keep their mind to it. With this feeling of power and compassion that someone can use towards helping others, a hero can also be considered someone that is risking themselves as well as benefiting others (Rankin & Eagly 414). Lots of traits contribute to the factor of being a hero because it isn’t something easy to achieve. If someone becomes known as a hero that is an accomplishment for that person and will cherish the title of a hero for a long time, even if it was a single act for someone else.
