Heroism is defined as “the quality of heroic actions, showing great bravery”, (Oxford English Dictionary, 2014). This is compared to a modern definition of bravery as “a person who is greatly admired for brave deeds or an illustrious warrior and one who shows great courage”, (Merriam-Webster, 2014). This shows the definition has remained the same for many years. The word hero comes from the Latin word heros, which was derived from the Greek word hērōs. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the first known use was in the fourteenth century. Some synonyms of the word hero are idol, icon or god. Antonyms of the word hero are coward and villain. Both Gandhi and Mother Teresa demonstrate enormous heroic actions, and both exceed the definition …show more content…
The former, though, was ultimately more influential. She has reached a saintly status in people’s minds and serves as a symbol for peace and selflessness. Even after many years, she has an almost supernatural quality that might prompt our generation to wonder whether she actually existed instead of perhaps being a fairy tale symbol of humanity’s potential. Her strength and determination in the face of adversity were crucial to her fame and reverence. She wanted to make a difference and didn’t let obstacles stop her from doing this. She put all her faith in God and helped in every way possible and she died doing that and never gave up. She served as a great role model, a hero. She deserved all the awards that she received. In the end, further than Gandhi, she managed to make people all around the world think about how they treated each other. While Gandhi managed to draw attention to a specific country and to a revolutionary method of protest, Mother Teresa carried the light for improving people’s very relationships with each other. True heroes must be strong and courageous enough to stand up against wrongs or stick to their principles. They must also be willing to sacrifice their own safety and comfort at times in order to set examples for others or show their enemies that they will not back down. Mother Teresa is the best example of a hero from all of history. Never before or since has a person done so much for others and brought so many people together as Mother Theresa has.
