The Definition Of Freedom In Anthem By Ayn Rand

Freedom is a word that can be defined to every person in a different way. To all people though there is a way to feel freedom. To me, the definition of freedom is anyway a person wishes to express their emotions or feelings. It could be through playing an instrument, writing a story or simply talking. It’s not holding back from whatever it is that gives you the exhilarating and amazing feeling of being free. This goes along with the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which defines freedom as “the quality or state of being free; the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action”. The definition also goes along with my belief on how freedom is any way that you express yourself willingly. One example of being free through the expression of emotions/feelings is with music. To put restrictions on one’s mindset is like keeping an animal locked up in a cage. The only difference is eventually a person can and will break free of the chains put on them. One example of this could be examined in the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand. In the dystopian society presented in the book, all of the citizens were forbidden to act as individuals. Their minds had been set to not prefer certain activities or people more than another. This was a clear violation of a person’s freedom. The people in the novel had the right to prefer certain things over another. The main character Equality 7-2521 challenged this ideology and by doing so made himself as an individual better. He preferred to learn everything he could and one day he spoke out. This caused him to be exiled but afterwrds he made a plan to show his society what it was like to be free.
