Harry Truman said “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” We all search the meaning of courage. The definition of courage in Oxford English Dictionary is ‘the ability to do something that frightens one’. Traditionally, courage is often looked as physical bravery in which we see the hero making a sacrifice for the greater good. However , courage can be more than a physical act or stepping up to brightening scenarios. Malala Yousafzai, Lionel Messi and my brother Allan Carranza are young, courageous leaders, who took risks to accomplish their dreams while showing mental creativity and generosity to others. First, In his interview with ESPN he describes as a young boy having difficulties to grow in height and having to inject himself in the legs with medicine to aid him, showing a great discipline for physical courage. It did not stop there. Lionel's father was struggling with his salary due to the Argentinas economic crisis. With the medicine costing too much, it was extremely difficult to afford. Messi did not give up on his dream; he still managed to get noticed by a club to help pay his expensive medication. Furthermore, Messi is considered the best soccer player in the world, but that title does not stop him from being humble and remembering his roots; in humility, he is setting an example of moral courage for many people to follow. Finally, Messi’s success helped him open his own foundation called “Leo Messi Fundacion” that has been one of his goals in his life claimed in an interview by ESPN, showing great creative courage.
