The Failure Of The Reconstruction Era

When I first received this question, I had a completely blind look on the rocky road of American history. I really had no idea, and no opinion about how our country as we know it, was was made. This question has truly made me look deep and think even deeper as to how our country has developed. One of the most important things that I have learned this course is that American history constantly repeats itself. Starting with the Reconstruction period after the American Civil War, all the way to present day there have been many significant events that have shaped who we are as a nation. The answer to this question is right in front of us. This question can be answered in the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. By reading these documents, the reader might think that this democracy we have today did not come with a cost. But in all reality, America has a dark past that is looked over when reading these documents that America is based upon.

From reconstruction to present there have been many times where history repeats itself. A large failure was reconstruction. This was the time after the Civil War when the government was forced to recover from the war and what to do with all the newly freed blacks. It was a failure due to the south not wanting to rejoin the union. It was also a failure due to the blacks having to sharecrop and the black codes restricting them. Muckrakers really bring up some of the negatives in American society.
We see change still happening today when with the passing of gay rights. Also a large change is Obama Care. Democracy is a very slow process. Decisions cannot happen overnight. Also, Democracy is not a spectator sport. A lot of problems would be solved if people got involved with government and political issues. This course has shown me the light and dark times of American
