It is set in the era Nazi Germany and follows the story of a nine year old boy called Bruno. Bruno’s father is a nazi commandant and he moves his family from there lavish life in Berlin to an unfamiliar place called "Out-With,". Bruno being a young boy was very curious, wanting very much to explore. However he was strictly given boundaries that he was to never venture further but he could not contain his adventurous sprit and explores the unknown one afternoon. He comes across a young boy that he later finds out shares the same birthdate as himself, sitting on the other side of a fence. Bruno notices that the boy is wearing a striped cap and pajamas and also am armband with a star on it. Bruni and the boy named Shmuel become quick friends. The two boys talk about where they come from and there families and what there interests are. One of the questions bruno asks is why there are lots of people on the other side of the fence and what are they all going there. Unaware that he is living on periphery of a death camp. Bruno often visits shmuel, bringing him food and talking. The boys lament that they cannot play games together or explore. Shmuel revels to bruno that his dad has been missing and he has not been able to find him. Bruno wants to help so shmeul gets him some matching pajamas so he can come to the other side of the fence. follows the escapades of and English speaking south african boy, known as Peekay from the age of five to seventeen set in the early 1900s. His father is killed when he was very young and his mother has a mental breakdown so the boy is raised by his Zulu nanny. He is sent to an Afrikaans boarding school, where he is tormented as he is one of the youngest and the only english speaker. As world war two has recently begun Doc is put in prison after failing to inform the English government that he was a foreigner. Peekay visits Doc frequently and finds that is the he only ‘white’ man in the prison. An inmate named Geel Peit teaches peekay to box an spreads the myth that peekay is the rain maker the one to bring peace to all the tribes as peekay befriends and cares for all the coloured people and can see the injustice the white supremacy is bringing.
