First off, I am a commuter student, so I get to sleep in my own bed every night. Most of my friends in high school opted to live at school, when I asked them why, it was because they just wanted to get away from their parents and finally be free. While that is great and all, it just is not for me. As I mentioned earlier, I live with my father, who since I was young just let me do whatever I wanted and let me learn from my own mistakes. I do not feel imprisoned in my own house so I thought maybe I should the save the ten grand a year it costs to live on campus. Jennifer Retter, also of USA TODAY, explains it perfectly, “Because I avoided the expense of living on campus my freshman and sophomore years, I’ve been able to plan an upcoming study abroad experience. The money you save, the time you invest in school work and the extra effort you put into getting involved will open up new opportunities for you” (Retter). I find that, not having a dorm to go in between classes to lollygag in and instead doing my work in a quiet place is the reason I get any work done at all.
